Girnar

My 3rd visit so far…happy to visit yet again this year….

10-Oct-2014

Started from Borivali via Saurashtra Mail…reached Junagadh at 1.30pm…reached Hotel Harmony…which is just opposite ST bus stand…freshen up…thought rather than going directly to Girnar…will start in early morning and now visit zoo & fort…so had a cup of tea at ST bus stand…tasty tea….

Sakkarbaug Zoo

Took auto for Rs:30/-…reached Sakkarbaug Zoo…ticket was Rs:20/- and Rs:20/- for camera…..started watching with few birds…saw white peacock…then the real show started, when I went to tiger, lion section…what a view…saw 4-6 Tigers…one was White tiger…which I saw for first time…4 panthers….& 4-5 lions…lions were all sleeping..may be due to heat in the afternoon…then went to crocodile section…all crocodiles were in water…as it was afternoon…then saw one animal called Emu, then Ostrich…Hippo…and lastly…while Buck, lots of them.

It was almost 1 hrs and all done.

Then started for Uparkot Fort with auto for Rs: 40/-

Uparkot Fort

As I reached the entrance, chased by few guides…but started by own…then at one stall one small school buy (Karan) approached me saying he will show me 6 spots with Activa for Rs: 100/. I agreed…as thought I will save some time and also my walk…which I will need for tomorrow morning…he was a smart kid…at every spot he was saying nothing much to see here…:)

Saw few spots…2 canon (Neelam & Manek Guns), Ranak house I guess now Jama Mashid…some very old caves…and spot light was one well Adi Kadi Vav…which is formed inside one rock…there is one more well….Navghan Kuvo….which as per Karan would take almost 1 hrs…so I never tried to see this as its also inside ground level.

While leaving, also saw the water reservoir and also one more canon here Kandanal Gun, which Master Karan never mentioned 🙂

It was almost 1 hrs and all done.

My take, unless you are history lover, you can skip this, if you do not have time. I am not sure if I miss any more important spots in Uparkot Fort. But next time, I will try to see the well Navghan Kuvo, which I never visited due to time.

Went to Hotel room…had 1 hrs or so rest…..started by walk and went to Geeta Lodge…for Thali :)…had good dinner with unlimited butter milk…had khichadi…though thought the taste was not as good as last time or so…Thali is for Rs: 110/- sweets extra for Rs: 20/-

Had good “Pan” (Betel leaf) from adjacent Pan store…again had a walk to hotel room…tried to sleep…set alarm for 2am…thought to start by 3am.

11-10-2014

Never had good sleep…wake up by 1.40am…ready by 2.20am…took auto at ST bus stand for Rs: 100/- no time for bargain….reached Girnar Taleti….

Started at 2.40am….at first nobody were on the way…after 10 mins…all wet due to sweating…after 15 mins….saw a group who started earlier than me, resting on stairs…overtook them…again started…reached Jain Derasar at 2.50 am…..it was closed at this hour…started again…reached Gaumukh Ganga….by 2.56am….reached Amabaji Mata Temple @ 4am….which was again closed….asked one of the shop keeper….he said…it opens at 7.30am and closed at 7.30pm…started again…and reached Girnar temple at 4.40am…3 people from Mumbai were also waiting to open temple doors…I joined them…the pujari started performing daily rituals…so he asked to play any song of Shri Dattatraya on any one cell phone…nobody had any song of Shri Dattatraya…I said we can chant “Digambara Digambara Shripad vallabh Digambara”….all said ok..and we chanted for almost 20-25 min in this wee hours….gate opened by 5.15am…had very good Darshan…sat for 10-15 min in front of Shri Dattatraya idol…

Started by 5.40am or so….reached AmrutGiri Maharaj temple, where Ahand Dhuni is present…asked one of the pujaris to open the doors…..had good clam darshan….as it was above 6am, it was morning puja time…the pujari said…wait for puja….so I obliged…one pujari was performing puja…other was playing drum…one of the pujari instructed me to play metal disk with metal rod…had good puja for first time here…started again…now it was all step climb till Shri Gorakshanath temple…now started running…literally running…as all steps are even in shape…reached Ambaji mata temple.

Heard sound of puja inside…so it was open by 6.45am!…went inside …waited for puja to complete and had good darshan…again started running….reached Goumukh Ganga…went inside …had good darshan of Ganga….started running again and bypassed Jain Darasar…..this time as well never visited this place….reached the base of Girnar at 7.45am….

Thank god had good darshan…

On a separate note, as now having running “kida”…my both timings (up & down) were even split 🙂 2:07.39 & 2:07:59….:)

About Timing of temples

In Junagadh, everybody said temples are open 24 hrs…that’s not true…yes route is open 24hrs…you can walk without torch light…but generally all temples open by 6am and close by 8pm

You must have a walking stick while climbing Girnar. You can get walking stick on rent in all shops at the base of Girnar…but almost all shops are closed at non-normal hours….I mean when I started…all shops were closed….so if you are planning to start before 5am or so…make sure you have walking stick, it really helps…

Next time I will try for Datar Hills as well…
